Suspected Herdsmen Kill 1, Injure 4 Others In Ogun

It was a tragic Friday in Oja-Odan, a border town in Egbado North Local Government Area of Ogun State when some suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded some farmlands and slaughtered a farmer,  Agbaose Sewotan while injuring four others.

Speaking with LEADERSHIP SUNDAY at Oja Odan, an elder brother to the deceased, Mr Oluwole Sewontan said the incident occurred at about 6pm in the evening of Friday when some suspected Fulani herdsmen invaded the deceased farmlands and destroyed some of his crops, but while trying to protest against the invasion, he was slaughtered.
Sewontan said the residents of Oja-Odan area were always attacked by these cattle rearers who killed people with impunity.
The group said there was urgent need for the concerned authorities to take serious measures to forestall another incessant attack.
Speaking on behalf of the groups, Mr. Lasisi Adewole said the Ketu communities, comprising about 30 villages, had often come under attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen operating between the borders of Nigeria and Benin Republic.
These armed attacks which began some years back, Adewole alleged, had led to the killing of no fewer than 40 innocent residents of the area.
According to him, three residents of the area, including Phillip Akanan from Owode-Ketu as well as Amosu Olofinjin and Akinola Tunde from Agbon-Ojodu, were allegedly killed this year alone by the suspected Fulani herdsmen.
Adewole also claimed that the herdsmen usually encroached and destroyed the farmlands, especially during the dry season. He claimed that efforts so far made to ensure that the Nigeria Police, State Security Service (SSS) and the state government put in place adequate security measures in the area had been fruitless.
