Stop spreading falsehood, ACN tells PDP

Lagos State chapter of the Action Congress of Nigeria has warned the state Peoples Democratic Party to stop spreading information that Governor Raji Fashola is threatening non-indigenes in the state.

In a statement on Monday by the state Publicity Secretary of the ACN, Joe Igbokwe, the party challenged Lagos PDP to tender proofs of how non- indigenes of Lagos were threatened.

He said, “We ask Lagos PDP to prove that it is only non-indigenes that operate okada in Lagos if it is desperate to misinform its audience that by telling okada operators to either conform to the law to restrict  .by

okada operation to certain roads in Lagos or ship out translates to waging war against non-indigenes.

“To twist the governor’s position that those that constitute threats to law and order in Lagos should either conform or ship out as threat to non-indigenes of Lagos is yet another case of the devilish falsehoods that now serve as anchor to the miserable lots of Lagos PDP.

“Lagos ACN is still waiting to hear the reaction of Lagos PDP to the decision of not less than 10 PDP states to totally ban okada operations in their states. We are yet to hear the response of Lagos PDP to the total ban imposed by the PDP government on okada operations in the Federal Capital Territory if it is now hooked to the okada politics for survival.”

Igbokwe, who wondered why Lagos PDP had always sought the assistance of the Federal Government to descend on the state, noted that Lagos was an autonomous unit of the federation.

He added, “Lagos ACN frowns seriously on the puerile resort of Lagos PDP to always call on President Jonathan to descend on Lagos, as if Lagos is a vassal territory to the PDP and the Federal Government.

“We want Lagos PDP to grow up to the fact that Lagos is an autonomous unit of the Federal Republic of Nigeria whose powers are derived from the federal constitution of Nigeria.”

According to him, if Fashola ever warns Lagosians who constitute menace to others, such warnings are within his constitutional powers as the number one citizen of the state.

ACN faults review summit in Ogoni

Action Congress of Nigeria, Rivers State chapter, has described the constitution review summit held in Bori, the headquarters of Ogoni, as a sham and a mockery of democracy.

A statement by the Publicity Secretary of the ACN in Rivers State, Jerry Needam, indicated that the outcome of the Bori conference was not the consensus of the Ogoni people and should be discarded.

The statement in Port Harcourt on Tuesday maintained that another review session was imperative to pave the way for a more representative position of Ogoni people.

Needam observed that the constitution review session in Bori by the member representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency, Mr. Morris Poronem, was faulty on account of its poor attendance.

He said, “The main stakeholders in Khana and Gokana Local Government Areas like the chairmen, councilors, recognised traditional rulers did not participate in the event.

“Other stateholder like the youth representatives, human rights activists, intellectuals, students, serving and former lawmakers and women groups were denied participation in the exercise due to poor publicity.”

“There also appears to be an evident disconnect between the member representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency as a result of alleged non-accessibility and poor representation at the National Assembly,” Jerry Needam further observed.

Meanwhile, Oil Producing Ethnic Nationalities in Nigeria has demanded an amendment to Section 162 and related aspects of the Constitution, relating to natural resources.

The group, in a memorandum to the House Committee on the review of the 1999 Constitution, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent, oil producing nationalities from Abia, Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Delta, Edo, Rivers, Ondo and Imo states, while calling for retention of sections 162 (2) (a) and (b), however sought for a new sub-section, 162 (2) (c), to be included in the proposed new constitution.

The communities in their memorandum among others are asking that the 13 per cent derivation fund, to oil producing communities be paid as, “first line charge,” from the Federation Account.

Agbakoba, Falana, Adebanjo Disagree death penalty for corruption

Eminent Nigerians comprising Senior Advocates of Nigeria, Olisa Agbakoba and Femi Falana – along with a leader of pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, on Thursday opposed the call for capital punishment for corruption.

In its proposal for constitution amendment submitted to the National Assembly, the northern political group, Arewa Consultative Forum, recommended that anybody found guilty of corruption should be killed.

President, Women Arise, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, and human rights lawyer, Fred Agbaje, also faulted the North’s call, saying imposition of death penalty had never served as deterrent to an offence.

They all spoke separately with our correspondents on the telephone on Thursday.

Agbakoba, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Assoiation, and Falana said what the nation needs to fight corruption is a strengthened legal system and a strong leadership with sufficient political will.

Agbakoba said, “It is understandable that people are frustrated and that is why they are calling for extreme measure but what we need is strong leadership to tackle corruption.

“There is extreme poverty in the land. Even if you impose death penalty, corruption will continue to grow if there is no strong leadership.

“What we need is strong EFCC, strong police, strong SSS, strong ICPC which will ensure that corrupt persons will be dealt with.”

Falana, a human rights lawyer, who described death penalty as barbaric, said with its introduction as punishment for robbery about 40 years ago, armed robbery continued to be on the rise in the country.

He said, “It is not the death penalty that will serve as the deterrent, it is the political will of the government of the day . It is the strong political will of the government of the day that will enforce the law, that will ensure that there is no sacred cow; that will ensure that reports indicting highly influential criminals are not suppressed.”

Adebanjo said the call for death sentence on corruption cases was too severe and that if those convicted for corruption charges were given necessary terms of imprisonment, it would act as deterrent.

Adebanjo said, “I think that is too severe. I think if those convicted of corruption are given necessary terms of imprisonment, it will be a form of deterrent. But to go to the extent of death sentence, I think it is too severe.”

Okei-Odumakin advocated a life imprisonment over death sentence.

She said, “While I have issues with capital punishment in general, the dimension corruption has taken in Nigeria is so frightening and it is becoming clear that we require to look at drastic measures to combat it.”

Agbaje, who also admitted the futility of death sentence as a deterrent for crime, called for “firmer and more severe punishment” instead of capital punishment.

Family of six in Zangon Kataf has been killed by Gunmen

  There was palpable tension in Kaduna State, yesterday, as hundreds of youths protested the alleged killing of six members of a family at Maduachi village in Zonkwa area of Zangon Kataf Local Government in the state by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
The youths carrying green leaves matched through the heart of the town, condemned the killing of the members of the family.
Another eyewitness told Vanguard that the gunmen numbering about 20 invaded the village and shot sporadically into the air for over 30 minutes before entering the family compound of the victims to kill them.
National President of Bajju Youth Association, Gad Ezekiel, in his account said the attackers killed all the members of the same family, leaving behind a little girl with bullet wounds.
Governor Patrick Yakowa of the state, however, condemned the killing, describing it as saddening. Yakowa spoke through his Senior Special Assistant (Media), Mr Reuben Buhari. Maduachi village is about two kilometres from Zonkwa.

…Kill three in Maiduguri

The Kaduna killing came against the backdrop of reports that unidentified gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram Islamic sect, yesterday, trailed three Igbo traders to their respective shops in Maiduguri, capital of Borno State and shot them dead.
The death of the traders in the Bulabulin ward of Biafra area of the state capital, brings to seven, the number of people so far killed in Maiduguri in the last four days.
The Chairman of Zagon Kataf Local Government Area, Mr Dominic Yahaya confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with Vanguard, saying: “The attackers came in the early hours of today (yesterday) and shot the family of one Yakubu Kayit. They killed members of the family and burnt their corpses. A little girl with bullet wounds was the only survivor.

Tension as youths protest

“There was really tension here when the youths came out in large numbers this morning and protested the murder. It was a very tough task calming them down. I am told that the attackers are being trailed. It was indeed a gory sight to see these corpses,” Yahaya said,
Another resident of the area, Emmanuel Danboyi, said the incident allegedly happened at about 11p.m.
He said: “In the day time, we saw a trailer parked but at about 11p.m. when we had gone to bed, we began to hear gun shots for several minutes. By then, I had to evacuate my family to a safe place. Later, we discovered that all the people in the house had been killed and burnt  beyond recognition.“
State Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent Aminu Lawan, while confirming the incident on telephone, said investigation had commenced, adding that no arrest had been made.

Yakowa condemns killings

However, a Government House statement, yesterday, read in part: “The Governor of Kaduna State is truly saddened by the gory incident of Wednesday 14, 2012 in Madauchi, Zangon Kataf Local Government. But even in the face of such unwarranted and deliberate attempt to incite and create chaos, the state government will not be deterred in its quest of ensuring a secured and united Kaduna State.
“The state government, while totally condemning the killing as an act of barbarism, sympathized with the families of the departed, His Highness, the Agwam Bajju, Mallam Nuhu Bature, the Local Government Council and the entire people of the state.
Meanwhile, in the Maiduguri killings, the gunmen stormed the traders’ shops in a tricycle, chanting God is great and started firing gunshots into the air to scare people away.
Vanguard learnt that the Bulabulin ward, facing the eastern flank of popular Maiduguri Monday Market, MMMK, has been condoned off by men of the Joint Task Force, JTF, to prevent further attacks and killings.
Ahmadu Bello Way and the Shehuri North road were closed bY   JTF, leaving only the Shehu Laminu Way for motorists and pedestrians yesterday in Maiduguri.
Spokesman of the  Borno State Police Command, Gideon Jibrin confirmed that there were attacks on some shops in Bulabulin ward of the metropolis yesterday morning adding, that three people were killed in their shops by suspected members of the Boko Haram sect.
He said no arrests have been made by either the police or JTF.

He is survived by his wife Mrs. Helen Aina Eso, his children Funmilayo EsoWilliams and Olumide Eso, as well as his grandchildren.
